Travel friendships are not like friendships back home. Anyone that has traveled has made these friendships and has probably uttered the words I can’t believe I’ve only known you for 4 days! Back home we’d be strangers but traveling in another country together you feel like best friends. Travel days are not the same as home days. The relationships and friendships you forge away from home are so intense because you’re together all the time and your away from the everyday distractions and stresses of life. These friendships and relationships leave a lasting memory and are one of the biggest reasons why people get hooked on traveling.

Making new friends at the Holi (Colour) Festival

When you travel you live in the moment which provides you the opportunity to show your best, let your guard down and truly show who you are as a person. This allows you the ability to relate on a deeper level with most people you meet. No one cares how much money your make, what your job is back home, what car you drive or how big your house is. What matters is what kind of person you are which in the real world should also matter. No matter how different you are back home you’ll always relate through your passion to explore the world and learn about about yourself. You’ll share experiences unlike any back home with culture shock, historical sights, new foods, thrilling adventures, breathtaking sunsets and views, long and bumpy bus rides, disgusting washrooms, and endless nights of drinking. The bond of what you experience ties us and makes us friends for life. These experiences also allow you to have more open and honest conversations. You get to have deeper discussions about life and talk about things you many never be able to with someone back home.

The only negative aspect of these friendships is they only last for a short period of time and saying goodbye sometimes is not easy and can be very difficult. However with Facebook, Skype and other technologies these friendships can last. The exciting thing about traveling is you’ll have another friendship or relationship you’ll develop perhaps on your next destination, next guesthouse you stay at, next bus or boat ride, or adventure activity you take part in.

I feel extremely lucky for all the wonderful friendships and relationships I’ve made through my travel experiences. I would never give any of them up and would encourage anyone to go out and travel and experience them for themselves.
